After an anonymous tip-off, white collar worker, Takuro Yamashita (Koji Yakusho), brutally stabs his wife and her lover in a jealous rage. After eight years in prison he is relocated to a small town where he befriends a fisherman, a priest and an eel.

Reopening a ramshackle barbershop, he meets several of the towns eccentric locals, none of whom are aware of his troubled past. One of these, the beautiful Keiko Hattori (Misa Shimizu), looks strikingly similar to the wife he had murdered almost a decade before. Grudgingly employing her as his assistant, Yamashita soon finds his business booming and vainly attempts to repress his growing desire for her. Just as their world begins to find some semblance of harmony, Yamashit's former prison-mate threatens to expose his secret, and Keiko's former lover has his eye on the family fortune.
