After seeing this film 7 years ago when it was released and loving it, I was really excited about seeing it again. But alas, it certainly has dated and totally lost it's appeal which is a shame. Leo and Tilda put up some fantastic performances and there are some chilling scenes-the Swede's shark attack and the surfer dudes getting shot by the dope farmers, however this film annoyed me with it's stereo-typical British hippies on a commune singing Bob Marley and hanging out in their shared quarters. The scene where Leo goes crazy and embarks on a computer game-like shooting spree to the soundtrack of Blur slightly excited me. The island The Beach was filmed on, Ko Phi Phi Le in Thailand has been destroyed and the case is still going through the Thai courts to seek damages from 20th Century Fox. 20th Century Fox bulldozed and rescaped the beach to make it look 'perfect'. The end result is that damage to the ecosystem is permanent and restoration attempts failed-this really puts me off this film now!
