Author - Lloyd Jones

Country - New Zealand

Year - 2006

Set on Bougainville Island, Mister Pip is touted as "A love song to the power of imagination and of storytelling, it shows how books can change lives." Mister Pip is narrated by Matilda a Bougainvillean recollecting her life as a 14 year old growing up surrounded by civil war. Mr Watts the default teacher in Matilda's village introduces her to Charles Dickens' Great Expectations leading to strange and ultimately tragic encounters with the bougainvillian 'Rambo's' and the Papua New Guinean 'redskins'. This book is a great read and comes highly recommended.
