Cast – Jake Gyllenhaal, Mark Ruffalo, Chloe Sevigny, Robert Downey Jr

Zodiac tells the real life story of a series of unsolved murders that occurred in Northern California in the late 1960’s, encrypted letters were sent to the press claiming responsibility for the murders by someone who called himself the Zodiac.

Zodiac opens with a tense scene and manages to hold the tension throughout its lengthy 2 hours and 38 minutes, shot in a seamless 70’s cop show style David Fincher ignores the standoutish, trick filled, filmmaking style of his films Seven and Fight Club. With Zodiac the filming is fluid and the editing is transparent making it very easy to get lost in the narrative. Jake Gyllenhaal (Donnie Darko) plays a nerdy Robert Graysmith who wrote the books that this film is based on, Robert is working as a cartoonist for the San Francisco Chronicle at the time of the Zodiac killings and becomes obsessed with the case. Also working at the San Francisco Chronicle is the alcoholic, drug taking Journalist Paul Avery who is played by Robert Downey Jr. It comes as little surprise that Downey Jr. does a great job playing the addled character. Mark Ruffalo is a convincing cynical cop but Chloe Sevigny adds little to the film although that might be because I have had the misfortune of seeing Brown Bunny.

Though expansive in length Zodiac grips its audience for its entirety, it successfully frustrates us with its lack of resolution and entertains us with its wonderful script and acting. Zodiac has the looks and the substance so it's definitely worth seeing.
